Is Kybella safe?

Common side effects may include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness or formation of small areas of firmness in the submental area. These usually resolve within 1-4 weeks without intervention. During clinical research studies, serious adverse events such as facial asymmetry or trouble swallowing were limited to 1.6% of study participants.

Who cannot receive treatment with Kybella?

Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have trouble swallowing or have bleeding problems or are on blood thinning medications should not be treated. You must have at least a ½ inch of fat in the area to be treated.

What can I do to prepare for the procedure?

Before the procedure:
Avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen for 10 days prior to injections to reduce the risk of bruising. PLAN TO BE VERY SWOLLEN IN THE TREATED AREA FOR 1-2 WEEKS. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be taken 1 hour prior to reduce discomfort during treatment.

When will I see the results?

You’ll see the results within six weeks after your last treatment session. Your chin profile will continue to improve for six months.

How long do results last?

Results are permanent. The fat cells that are destroyed cannot be reproduced. However, we also will likely not destroy every fat cell in your body. Everyone’s body has the ability to accumulate fat from the remaining fat cells when they increase in size due to weight gain; in other words, remaining fat cells (those not destroyed) can enlarge secondary to metabolic and dietary changes, but they will not multiply by creating “new” cells. If you gain weight after being treated with Kybella, when you lose the weight again, you will regain your previous results.

What can I do to recover?

To prevent swelling, avoid salt and alcohol. If swelling or bruising occurs, use an ice or cold pack on the treated area for a few hours. You may want to consider scheduling your treatment as close to the weekend as possible, giving you a few days to recover before continuing your daily routines. You may desire “social” downtime – meaning you might find yourself inside or taking time off from social activities if you want to avoid people noticing swelling or bruising you may have from your procedure. However, there will be no significant hindrance to your normal mobility or day-to-day functioning.

Will I need multiple treatments?
